Every day we act on false premises - and, except by accident, pay the penalty. Usually, however, the penalties are mild ("You mean the movie started an hour ago?!" but occasionally they can be fatal ("I'm a great driver with great reflexes, so I drive as fast as I want when no cops are around!") Every move we make, or decision we make, is based on conscious or unconscious premises. Since we can't spend our lives probing each one, we do the best we can. But it goes without saying that living is not a scientific enterprise.
