My take on all of this. When you sing a song you're giving your own interpretation of it. This can be varied from the "original" in structure, tempo, style, emotion, etc. All that really matters is that you sing it how you feel it. (Unless of course you are getting paid to perform it in a certain way and therefore by not doing so, you shortchange your customers.) As for repeating the first verse, I have no problems with that as it can be used with effect as a bookend to the story.
