Don't know what happened above. Eddie1. Don't know where you are geographically but I had similar problems with my tablet, which I acquired for much the same reasons as you, and "wonderful" Windows 10. I took it to my little man - actually he is quite a big man - and after we had downloaded all and any data to a stick he reformatted it and installed XP. I only turn on the wifi when I want to use the web and have all the settings set to non automatic. It now works fine and additionally means I can use the software I have been using for years before Microsoft "improved" it and made it unworkable. All the above was done quite legally by the way and cost me £30. Best of luck.
