The accident in itself wasn't really extreme, but the total experience was memorable. It was almost 60 years ago. Our family, consisting of our parents, my older sister, and myself, were driving in Nebraska by night, returning from a vacation further west. A car meeting us drove (slowly ) off a curve and disappeared down an embankment. When we got out to look, the car was sideways to the slope, obviously teetering very precariously. So far as I remember that detail, the two men inside got out without the car tipping, and we helped them up unto the road. Our car was so packed full for travel that we couldn't envision giving them a ride, so Dad opted to wait with them for someone to pick them up. One, at least, was drunk enough that Dad feared they might mess around with their car if left alone. There was very little traffic. When a pickup did stop, it promptly left with the younger of the men. Which left us there with the oldest man in Nebraska. We settled on driving him a few miles to the town of his choice, with him sitting on my lap. He was so dried up that it was barely uncomfortable for me. On the way, he told us that he had lived in that area since 1812. I can assure you that, in this instance, seeing was believing
