Just to show that those signs on motorways are not there for nothing: travelling north of Birmingham one evening in the autumn about 40 years ago, there was an advisory 40mph limit flashing up, but no sign of any reason for it. After a couple of miles of trying to keep speed down, seems everyone decided there was nothing to worry about, and sped up again. And then it all started...thick fog, cars bumping into each other as if on a "dodgem car" track. A car from the outer lane crossed our bonnet diagonally, narrowly missing it, continued in its trajectory across all 3 lanes and hard shoulder, and up on to the nearside bank. My husband somehow managed to weave his way through this mayhem of numerous shunting cars and emerged unscathed. Sorry, but we didn't think it a good idea to stop or look back, just thankful to get through undamaged/ uninjured.
