One more item related to Medicare and insurance. This is based on my years of working in healthcare and seeing the impact of differences in insurance coverage for folks over age 65. Unless the cost of paying the Medicare premium plus the cost of a good Medicare supplement means you can not also pay for your basic needs, go for straight Medicare plus a medicare supplement. You may be 'insurance poor' month to month. But otherwise you are likely to end up destitute over time and find that doctors will not see you again until you pay your arrears and that you are being constantly harrassed by debt collectors for accounts turned over from hospitals for tests and procedures for which plain medicare or so called Medicare Advantage policies leave you with expensive copays. And since you are getting older by the second, chances are nearly 100% the need for expensive medical care, tests and procedures looms just over the horizon.
