I heard a bit of the song about the Chinese cockle pickers today on radio 4. I can't help but listen to the words on a song like that. Except for the work songs, I always thought that what mostly separates a folk song from a pop song was the telling of a story. A little while ago we did a folk dance session for a primary school in Rochester and to give the children a breather we sang ' The Rochester Recruiting Sergeant'. I don't think we mumble, but the children were quite poor at picking up what the song was about. I think there might be a PHd in researching how and when ( if ever ) children actually listen to song words, and how many adults do. FloraG.
