I should have said earlier that I do listen to the words of folk songs much more because folk songs so often have a story behind them. Another problem of course is when the acoustics of a venue are against you. I was part of the choir for Sid Calderbanks presentation for the 200th anniversary of Edwin Waugh's birth(viewable on YouTube I believe). It was held in Rochdale town hall, a manificent building and well worth seeing, but the acoustics are dreadful. It was lucky that the lyrics were all printed in the programmes, but it did mean that we saw a lot of the tops of heads as the audience followed the song words!
