Steve Gardham Blue bird of hull (16) RE: Blue bird of hull 11 Feb 17

Nearest local shipwreck tune I can get that fits this format is the one I use for 'Wreck of the Industry off Spurn'. It's closely related to 'Dark-eyed Sailor'

I've adjusted the words to fit better but still not satisfied with it. I'll sing it over a few times and see what needs adjusting.

Twas Christmas Eve in 72
The waves ran high and billows roared,
The little Bluebird, a brig from Hull
Was tossed upon the Swedish shore.

The crew were sleeping down below
The storm was raging and getting worse,
Lashed to the wheel was Karl the Swede
And kept the brig upon its course.

Half blinded by the driving snow,
And battered by the sweeping waves,
He saw the beam from the Hallo light
And steered the brig on to be saved.

In Smogen his mother sat in distress,
That very morn she had got word,
She knew he was out in that raging storm,
And prayed to God he would be spared.

Karl hailed the skipper and showed the light,
Just as the brig she ran aground,
"Lower the anchors, send down the boats,
For the Bluebird she is going down."

His father he stood on the shore,
And saw the brig was in distress,
He helped the crew as they came ashore,
All unaware there was one man less.

He fed and watered all the crew,
Then asked the skipper, "What was your ship?"
"She was the Bluebird sailing out of Hull,
To Smogen it is her last trip!"

His father threw his glass to ground.
"Oh God above, where is my son?"
Lashed to the wheel they left him there,
Now to his maker he has gone!

The old man his sowester took off,
His stare was hard, his eyes were dull;
"Don't tell his mother the name of the brig,
Please don't tell her the Bluebird of Hull."

The skipper stood all broken and grey,
The crew were still, their heads hung down
With trembling voice said to his host,
"Lashed to the wheel he was left to drown!"
