The problem with Barthes proposition of course, is that the movement against the establishment is not confined to those who voted for Donal-John, the whole of Western Europe has had enough of being lectured by a well off elite on how to conduct themselves socially and politically while their jobs a standard of living go down the pan. Barthes considers politics to be a showground in which victory in elections compensates for an ever falling standard of living and political incursions into traditional social values, I consider that he has made an accurate assessment of the situation which pertains at the moment, but do not believe for a minute that "ordinary people" as opposed to the political and social elite are stupid. They vote with their bellies, not by the influence of highbrow psychology.
