My father once got poking around in the family tree: he said he got back several generations, found no one of any account, and gave it up when he came to 'Jim the Pauper'. A great-aunt claimed my father's grandfather had been a Brigadier-General in the Crimean War. Others in the family thought he might have been a Sergeant-Major in said war. Having recently viewed his military record on-line, I can attest that he remained a private throughout his military career, and went nowhere near Crimea. (@Senoufou: there are some Weirs in a branch of my tree; they step in around 1800, and are out by the 1880s or so, if I remember correctly.)
