From: Jim Carroll - PM Date: 13 Jun 17 - 11:28 AM "the likes of us" I haven't - you introduced the term into the conversation - not one I use. It seems fairly widely accepted that higher education is now beyond the expectations of of the less well off in Britain - hope you are not telling me I shouldn't mention that! It was ever thus. It is not a new thing brought in by the Conservative party. Children of the "less well off" were often kept out of higher education even when there was a full grant available, because their families needed an extra pay packet to come in to the family finances. The facts of life even then meant that the children of "better off" families were more likely to be able to go to university.
