"Battleship Of Maine" is a good example of how popular the first-person 12-bar song with third-line refrain was. John Hurt learned "Hop Joint" in about 1902, for instance. Those songs often had lyrical chunks (including in refrains) in common with the third-person 12-bar bad man songs of the 1890s. |
