EFDSS announces Alan Davey CBE as new board appointment

Arts and music supremo Alan Davey CBE, currently Controller of BBC Radio 3 and previously Chief Executive of the Arts Council, has taken up a voluntary three-year post on the board of trustees at the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), the national development agency for the folk arts.

Alan, a long time folk music fan, joined the board - which is responsible for the strategy direction and governance of the charity – earlier this year.

EFDSS' key aim is to preserve, protect, disseminate and promote traditional English folk arts through its nationwide education programme.

It runs Cecil Sharp House in London, which is a lively venue for folk performance and education events and houses the national folk music library and archive, the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library.

Alan said: "Throughout my life I've been curious about all kinds of music, but folk music and an interest in folk traditions around the world has been a constant for me. I'm interested in how folk music relates to other types of music – classical and others – and traditional music from all over the world.

"A long time attendee at Cecil Sharp House, I'm an enthusiastic amateur guitarist and have just set about learning the mandolin. It's an honour to join the board of the EFDSS."

Chairman of the EFDSS board Alistair Anderson said: "We are very pleased to welcome Alan to the EFDSS Board. He brings a wealth of skills and experience to the role that will enable the Society to continue to progress."
