Pipe Major John McLellan (not Mac) of Dunoon 1875-1949 composed The Bloody Fields of Flanders and a wealth of other pipe tunes. He served in the Boer War and WW1. William Lawrie of Ballachulish (composer of Battle of the Somme and other excellent tunes) became pipe major of the A&SH in 1915 - at that time John McLellan was wounded and away recuperating. (Captain John Lauder, a talented pianist and son of Harry Lauder, also served in the regiment at that time, and died in France just a month after William Lawrie died. Willaim Lawrie (sometimes spelled Laurie) was and is a highly regarded composer of pipe tunes and was a talented piper, and member of a musical family.
