Yes, I wasn't thinking about 'cherished' versions so much as just the version you're used to - in my case the first version I owned and got used to. Coincidentally, for Beethoven, that was also the Vienna Phil, conducted by Karl Böhm on a DGG box set of LPs. I don't know it's good or bad but it set the 'standard' against which I still compare what I hear in the radio - tempo, particularly. That's still true despite having since bought it on CD: the Vienna Phil again, with Rattle. For better of worse Karl Böhm's version is burned into my synapses!
