"Socialists make the mistake of confusing individual worth with success. "
And conservatives make the mistake of confusing individual worth with the privilege wealth and security brings
Equally, they consistently confuse (or hide behind) "jealousy" with desire wor equality of opportunity and natural justice.
If your system gave us the best leaders it wouldn't be dominated by the Boris Johnsons, Enoch Powells and Margaret Thatchers of this world.
A hastily gathered assemblage of quotes by the privileged proves nothing much
For around ten years I worked for some of Britain's richest people (a lucky accident of employment brought about by living in the rich underbelly of Britain - the South East) - the owner of McAlpines, Peers of the realm, high court judges, film producers, media stars, playwrights and actors - I once saw Princess Di under a hair drier in a posh hairdressers in the West End
Some of them were pleasant people, some were up their own arses, but a consistent thread running through a large number of them was their lack appreciation of what they had.
If you commented on an original painting on their wall they would tell you how much it cost, seldom how beautiful it was
You could go into a room lined with books that made a collector like myself's mouth water, then go upstairs to the bedroom to find Jeffrey Archer on one side of the bed and Barbara Cartland on the other
There were exceptions of course - I worked for a now prominent high court judge - he played Bruce Springsteen guitar for relaxation, his wife and I spent hours discussing classic films
My apologies if I got you wrong DMcG
No offence meant
Jim Carroll
