I have always thought that "the fiery and the snuffy" referred to two kinds of cow-personalities--the kind that are always heading off on a tangent and uncooperative (fiery) and the kind that lag behind smelling the roses and delaying the herd (the snuffy). I expect this is just ill-informed imagination on my part, though. I have always sung "two daughters and a song". "One went to Denver, and the other went wrong." This may just be rampant mondegreenery, though. A
