Of course, it's impossible for us to hear Muddy's stuff, now, as it would have sounded at the time. Which is true of any "old music". For example, today, on Youtube, I was watching a kid play part of Beethoven's Waldstein Piano Sonata, and I thought, " That still sounds great but my God, it must have sounded like something from another universe 200plus years ago".
