I find amazing the following: Columbia published the first 33 rpm LP in 1948 Ten years later in Italy I had a repertoire of about 300 folksongs, created through listening to records by Folkways (6.99 $ each = 7 grams of gold at that time), and reading collections by Child and Nigra. No photocopies still at that time, and to get the lyrics I went to the US library in Milano, Usis. Only a pencil was allowed. Knowing nothing about the war with Spain, for me Maine was a US state. Compare with the 20+ versions available with the link above, and the discussion in this thread, with all the help Internet may give. At that time, no such research, but only the lyrics and the music and the chords were the aim. No pro or con war. Just imagine what the research will be in another 60 years. Just have fun. A fellow swiss researcher was stunned.
