I read that this version is from the Boer war, but which Boer war I don't know. The Auntie Mary thing is clearly older however. As far as I know, the earliest version is called "The Cock of the North", which is named after a tradition of calling the chief of the Scottish Gordon clan the same thing. It started with Alexander, Duke of Gordon (can't remember which Duke).
