The day has been heavily commercialised in recent times but the Aussies have a nasty habit of tagging all things onto a "long weekend". Don't know if that explains why a number of eateries are offering "Valentine meals" on Friday, 15th February. Perhaps someone can write a song (not something I would normally advocate) about this particularly cynical practice? You will guess that myself and the Vice Admiral / Duchess are on our annual missionary journey to try to civilise the invasive natives.
