One thing that strikes me about these discussions is the intolerance of each others perspectives. There is no one way to interpret a folk song, as with any other form of music. If you don't like someone else's interpretation, so be it. It doesn't mean it's wrong, or necessarily even a poor interpretation. I think it's worth bearing in mind Martyn Carthy's comment on folk song. "The worst thing we can do with these songs is not to sing them" Think on that when you condemn someone else's version of a traditional song.
