When I observed Johnny Carignan play, it seemed that he did not keep his little finger on the stick and maybe did some other unorthodox anti-classical moves. I know that many classical violinists came to observe how he displayed a dazzling technique that might be considered all wrong in classical hand held positions. I know some players who play well holding the end of the fiddle on their chest which must affect their bow hold. I wonder if holding the stick away from the frog offers a lighter more dancing touch then the traditional position at the frog? Can you get a real lilt with the classical bow hold?
