tenner = ten pounds (sterling) although used in Ireland re euros

tanner = six old pence (pre-decimal)- normally in the form of a sixpenny piece or tanner- half of a shilling (also in Ireland)

current tanner equivalent is 2 and a half new decimal pence- 40 would make only ONE pound- so a tenner was expensive for Peggy's services!!
a coin dealer might give you more of course-

old currency was discontinued in UK in 1971.
