If J.F. Poole did indeed write Mush Mush Mush etc or Tread On The Tail Of Me Coat it would not surprise me. Poole wrote the popular number "No Irish Need Apply" (the one that begins "I'm a dacent lad just landed from the town of Ballyfad"). Poole also was a prolific writer of plays and sketches (and songs) for the NYC Variety Theatres of the 1860s and 1870s.He was "house dramatist" for several of them. Of course dragging ones coat in front of your foes (and daring them to tread on it) was an act of defiance (supposedly) for Irish "faction fighters" of an earlier age.
