It seems these songs have the same melody and many of the same lyrics. I know Vernon Dalhart claims to have written the Prisoner's Song (or rather to have learned it from someone who's brother found the lyrics scratched on a jail cell) circa 1925. Where does "Blues Eyes" come from? I assume it's a derivative since, I've heard recordings by the Carter Family which I assume are after Vernon Dalhart, but I've also found North Carolina Rambler's (song link) with Roy Harvey that I have not ascertained the date on? Is the melody older than both songs?
