In the days this song was written every thing ran on plain bearings. Roller bearings did not come into general use until the 1940's. The last steam engines built in 1944 and later had them as did the new diesels. So the term 'waste' referred to cotton stuffed in the journal boxes to aid the oil into the bearings. The engine drivers generally had mechanical oilers. |
