I believe he said in the record notes on Live, Between the Breaks; that he needed to make sure he left pauses in the lyrics where he could take a breath; that he hadn't put any in that song. That may be some of what you were hearing. I met him several times, but didn't know him well enough to know if he had any serious respiratory issues or not. There are probably others on the forum who might know.
