The Adelphi was the best folk club ever. It was started and run by John Makin and his flat-mate, Dave Yoxhall. They were both students at Swansea Uni. It was always packed and the chorus singing was so enthusiastic, it made up part of the performance. The music was eclectic... English trad, American blues, Irish, Scottish and possibly Welsh. Memorable nights were Jo-Ann Kelly, Rev Gary Davies and the Young Tradition but it didn't matter if the guests didn't turn up (Jansch and Renbourne) as there was plenty of talent in the room for a really great night. I used to sell the raffle tickets for LPs which were always (I think) from the collections of John or Dave. Dave's girlfriend (later to be his wife) Carole, took money on the door. Folk Clubs ain't what they used to be and I'm glad I was around to a regular at the Adelphi until I left home to go to art school...the same art school, incidentally, attended by Sandy Denny (also a guest at the club) and John Renbourne.
