The gypsies saved a HUGE chunk of the Welsh music tradition from extinction - both repertoire and instruments. The Roberts and the Woods families certainly 'saved' the Welsh triple harp and its music as Wales underwent waves of non-conformist Christian revivals. The Roberts family eventually formed a family harp orchestra which played for Queen Victoria.

trac ran a project with the Gypsy Unit of Monkton School, Pembrokeshire some years ago, bringing in Huw Williams, Robin Huw Bowen, and Roma singer Ida Kelarova to work with the kids - a large number of the kids were connected to those families and proud of it.

If you want to hear some of the harp music the Gypsies preserved you could do worse than listen to Robin Huw Bowen's triple harp playing.
