Here you go, Moorley Man...

The Mother’s Story
©~Feb 2012 Vikki Appleton Fielden

Once I had a bonny daughter
Many suitors sought her hand
Pure of heart and fair of face
Her fame it spread throughout the land

chorus:
(Oh) Cold the wind (and) cruel the sea
That carried o’er the sailor lad
Who stole my daughter away from me

One fine day she met a sailor
Bold and handsome, strong & brave
Speaking words as sweet as honey
And to him her heart she gave

chorus

So the wedding bans were posted
And the couple made their plans
Every morning as they walked
Together across the harbour’s sands

chorus

Then one morning, oh so early
A young sailor did appear
Shot my daughter and her lover
While his crew and captain cheered

chorus

Since I lost my bonny daughter
Here in Bedlam I remain
All because she loved a sailor
William Taylor was his name

Written because it seems rather unfair to me that William Taylor's old girl friend shoots the new one (fair enough if she wants to shoot him! ;-) ), as it's highly unlikely the new sweetheart would be aware of the previous one.)

Very rough recording of me singing it here: https://soundcloud.com/user-878817332/the-mothers-story
