"this island has never really been a single political unit" That's an extraordinary statement. The whole of the UK comes under a single government and all parts send representatives to Parliament. Of course there are regional identities and differences, within England itself as well as the other nations, and some regions have devolved powers but these derive from the national government. Of course there is not unity of political opinion, but that is not the same thing.
