Sandman said "The problem appears to be with copyright on modern popfolk country recordings, not trad arr folk musics logically if folk clubs consisted of people playing ONLY trad folk music the problem would not exist" The performers own the copyright in their own performance, which is quite separate from the copyright (if any) in the material they perform. Performing only trad/public domain material doesn't get around that issue.
