It's been so long since I've had a fiddle in my hands that you'll probably get a good laugh out of my ignorance but I don't recall every working that hard on positions. I remember about not using 2nd position because it was easier to find third and I believe the same was true of fourth and fifth. But I don't recall that it was that difficult, any of it. Just work at it and it will come. Course it helps if you're eight or nine years old. And if it doesn't come as Sorcha said, transpose, but not Massanet, I think. Anyway, Devil's Dream or Chicken Reel is more fun, especially if you've got a good caller.
When I was eight, Fritz Kreisler made an appearance in Sacramento at the Memorial Auditorium and our violin teacher took all five of us students to hear him play. Bought our tickets (probably about 75 cents apiece) and drove us the forty miles to town and back. What a wonderful lady. Somewhere between Caprice Viennois and Leibestraum I fell asleep, and when I awoke it was to the rousing applause that accompanied the final curtain. It was a long time before I lived that one down.
Good luck, Spud
