My parents had a mirror over their mantel in the living room, something pretty much de rigeur in those days. I think it had been a wedding present when they married in 1946. One of my facebook groups posts about treasures they have found in op shops (Ozzies don't have thrift shops, we have op shops - op is short for 'opportunity') and mirrors, particularly those with Art Deco designs, have become popular in recent times. Some are very pretty indeed. Charmion, yours sounds wonderful! These days we probably put the TV over the mantel, instead of a mirror.......
