The stanza form, in Wales, is known as Mentra Gwen. One specific song, still popular, is titled Mentra Gwen but the metre is found in carols, songs, and ballads, and in various modes. The tune was first noted, in Wales, in the mid-eighteenth century but apparently the verse pattern was recorded in Scotland in the sixteenth century (ref: Welsh Traditional Music, Phyllis Kinney, 2011). |
