Cyril Tawney was the first guest of the Beacon folk club in South Shields in late 1963. The club moved to the Marsden Inn in 1964, and in 1988 Cyril became its honoured guest for the 25th anniversary in 1988, as part of a celebration weekend. He started his night by saying how good it was to be 'back in the Jimnasium' -explanation- four residents were club founder Jim Sharp, the late lamented Jims Irvine and Boyles, and myself.
