Lovers of 'traditional' music have been conned by the music industry into the situation accurately described by Ewan M above. For me, particpation is everything, and technical ability is way down the list of qualities needed by a performer of traditional music. It is above all, music of the folk & when it is grabbed & controlled by money men , for me it just ceases to be of interest. Folk degrees are offered leading to careers & business plans, but there are many people who have run the more informal folk scene without any element of self-interest for 60 years plus. This is NOT to knock the singers and musicians who are part of the modern setup- I am one of them myself in a small way, it's just how it is.... The pub 'session' is the antithesis of the BBC TRAD AWARDS although even they can become exclsive- eg the closed circle in the corner of a public bar.....inclusivity is the essence, and all the older traditional singers and musicians I've ever met knew this instinctively! This might be a pre-covid argument when distanced experience has become the only safe option, and not an attempt to define traditional music, just my opinion.
