Big Al Whittle Hey ho! Come to the fair! (2) Hey ho! Come to the fair! 12 Apr 23

Does anyone else remember when Wilfred Pickles radio programme transferred to the telly,   Surely it was part of cold war strategem to con the Russians into believing we were a nation of idiots there for the taking.

For those who did enjoy the advantages of our generation, it was a sort of talent show for ordinary folk. Expert yo yo operators were a regular feature. A song called 'If I were a blackbird, I'd whistle and sing' (with an interlude of birdsongs of the British Isles impressions) was very popular.

However the thing that really sticks in my mind was an inexhaustible supply of octagenerarian men sing a very long song called He Ho! Come to the fair!
THe prizes were not generous, but were apparently displayed on a table. Wilfred would ask, What's on the table , Mabel?
Mabel, being fortuitously his wife.
Sometimes there was ten shillings and some pipe tobacco. A cake. sometimes a cabbage.
Funny how these memories endure like things stuck in your teeth.
