I decided to listen again to the Limeliters' recording and Lou Gottlieb says at the beginning, "Our arrangement begins with a G Major triad...God willing!"

So, the Limeliters' version, at least, started out in the key of G.

Then I listened again to the Lebedeff 1941 version (my father's favorite) and it seemed to me that it also started out in G. Trying to play along on the guitar, I think the key may just be G - at least the way Lebedeff sung it.

Now, I freely admit to having a bit of a tin ear, but I think this may be a good starting point. If I have a free month or two, I might just try and puzzle it out.

If anyone else would like to take a crack at it, by all means be my guest.
