THE JEWISH post Thursday, April 23, 1953 ISRAEL FOLK DANCES: featuring Elyakum, Martha Schlamme and Mort Freeman. New York: Israel Music Foundation. Album $4.45, LP $4.00. The Israel Music Foundaion has done a superb job of presenting t'he spirit of Israel in this issue of Israel 'Folk Dances, including a Hora, a Sherelel the Cherkassiya, and three other folk-song-dances , .. Mayim Mayim, Hanoded, and 1m Hoopalnu. A booklet of dance instructions accompanies the record . . . but if the listener is an arm-chair enthusiast (as this reviewer is) the pleasure will be not one bit diminished by listening without dancing. In presenting the voice of Martha Schlamme, Viennese soprano, ISRAEL FOLK DANCES gives Winnipeg a fair sampling of what they missed when Miss Schlamme failed to appear here at the last ZCI concert. Distinctive feature of the record 'is the musical accompaniment to the dances. Here, instead of stealing the show" the Chalil, harmonica, ac-. cordion and other instrumentation is used suggestively . . . like the economy of pen or pencil in a Rembrandt sketch. There is a conscious oriental atmosphere ... complete to the Chinese gO?g and wailing Hindu type flute notes ... that brmgs to life the rich color of contemporary Israel as very :(,ew other recordings do. ISRAELI \ FOLK" DANCES bring into the Canadian Jewish home the utter informality of a spontaneous Kibbutz Hora, or one of those musicales that occur whenever Israeli soldiers gather in the last seats of a rickety Egged bus. Sharing the plaudits f01" this musical delight are Elyakum Shapira, conductor of the Israeli ,Folk Dance Orchestra; Mort Freeman, baritone; Moshe Batmor-Buchholtz, chalil; and Eli Gamliel, 'caller:' 1952 AUGUST 8, NYC MARTHA SCHLAMME, Accompanied by Tamara Bliss, piano A People's Artists Production 107-A JOHNNY I HARDLY KNEW YOU (Irish Folk Song) HOOTENANNY 107-A 107-B RABBI ELIMELECH (Yiddish Folk Song) HOOTENANNY 107-B, YIVO CD 1954, NYC Martha Schlamme, vocal; Tanya Gould, piano. 108-A MICHAEL HOOTENANNY 108-A 108-B DODI LI HOOTENANNY 108-A 1954 FOLKWAYS FP 843 GERMAN FOLK SONGS 10"-LP 196x Folkways FW 6843 German Folk Songs Pete Seeger accompanies on recorder & banjo A1 Wenn Alle Bruennlein Fliessen A2 Drobn Am Bergal, Da A3 Rosestock, Holderbluet - Landler A4 Es Geht Eine Dunkle Wolk Herein (Thirty-Years War) A5 Dat Du Min Leevsten Bist A6 Es Burebuebli B1 Muss I Denn B2 Ufm Berie, Da Geht der Wind B3 Bei Mondenschein B4 Yodel Song B5 Der Schwere Traum B6 Die Gedanken Sind Frei 1954 Vanguard VRS 7012 SONGS OF MANY LANDS 10"-LP Martha Schlamme Tanya Gould, piano A1 Gizratech (Israeli) A2 Die Vogelhochzeit (Austrian) A3 Broiges (Yiddish) A4 Yoshke furt awek (Yiddish) A5 Paal Paa Haaugen (Norwegian) A6 Harvest Dance (Russian) B1 I'm Going to get Married (Nova Scotia) B2 Get on board, little children (American) B3 No More (American) B4 A Soulcake (English) B5 Buffalo Boy (American) B6 Johnny, I Hardly Knew You (Irish) [BILLBOARD SEPT 4 1954] 1956 Vanguard VRS-497 12"-LP Chansons de Noël Christmas carols of France French texts with English translations on slipcase. Randal Rounding out Vanguard's impressive crop is JEWISH FOLK SONGS (VRS 9011), featuring the talented soprano, Martha Schlamme. Miss Schalmme's songs - by turns joyous, poignant, humorous, and tragic, draw upon long centuries of Jewish tradition: yet-both melodically and emotionally, they seem as fresh as tomorrow's sunrise. The Viennese-born vocalist is in top form, and the engineers have favored her with impeccable reproduction. 1958 Vanguard VRS-9019 FOLK SONGS OF MANY LANDS Fontana TFL 6006 Matha Schlamme and Tanya Gould Gizratech Die Vogelhochzeit Broiges Yoshke fuhrt awek Paal paa haugen Harvest dance Roe ve roa La petite Jeanneton I’m going to get married A soulchake Just like the swallow Get on goard, little children No more Buffalo boy Johnny, I hardly knew you.
