I don't think this is right, but this song is close: The Farmer Needs the Rain by Roy Forbes

I can't find a recording, but the song Prairie Farmer by Paul David (from his album Thresher) looks promising.

Otherwise, do you have any additional details to share? What genre? Male or female vocalist? Was the song of the period (1980s) or did it sound older?
