Neil D NPR: more on African banjo origins (12) RE: NPR: more on African banjo origins 12 Nov 23

There is a fascinating documentary called "The Librarian and the Banjo",
the inspiring true story of Dena Epstein, a music librarian who "wrote the book" on slave music, proving that Africans brought to the New World carried a rich musical culture, including an instrument that evolved into the banjo. She butted heads with the musicology establishment for decades but was eventually recognized as the true expert. The film culminates with a quite elderly Dena meeting with The Carolina Chocolate Drops who credit her influence on a new generation of Black banjoists.
