GUEST,Julia L Lyr Req: any new songs re Jean Armour Burns (6) RE: Lyr Req: any new songs re Jean Armour Burns 28 Feb 24

This is kind of a tribute to Jean which I concocted for a Burns supper for the traditional toast Tae the Lassies

TAE THE LASSES by Julia Lane
from A MAN’S A MAN Robert Burns 1795

Ye a’ hae heard o’ Rabbie Burns
His mony loves an' a' that?
He courted ane and twa by turns
Despite the kirk a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Repentance stool, an' a' that,
The lass who was most near at hand,
Was sonsie game for a' that.

What though on hamely fare they dine,
Wear hoddin grey, an' a' that?
Or dressed in silks, or quaffin’ wine --
A lass is a lass for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their tinsel show, an' a' that,
The buxom quean, tho' e'er sae poor,
Could fill the bill for a' that.

So wherefore did he lose his hairt
Tae bonny Jean, for a' that?
Tho' hundreds worshiped at his word,
She spoke her min’ for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
His poetry, an' a' that,
A lass o' independent mind,
She looked an' laughed at a' that.

So lassies list tae what I say
When romance strikes for a' that
Let Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth
Trump poesie an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Be well assured for a' that,
That honest men the world o'er
Are worth the trial for a' that.
