I supposed Elvis was advised/manipulated by Col Tom Parker. So, he maybe shoudn't be totally blamed for making such demands. His manager was quite a ruthless and shrewd individual by all accounts and very controlling. He refused to allow Presley to tour The UK, as I recall.
