Lighter Origins: Sweet Betsy from Pike (28) RE: Origins: Sweet Betsy from Pike 05 Jun 24

In 1860, "lover" still meant, according to Oxford, "A person who is in love with, or who is enamoured of, another person."

In other words, Ike was her suiter or "boyfriend" (a word not known in 1860).

Not what you're thinking, modern people!

More evidence: the "baby clothes" looked "suspicious" but "were all on the square."

Even that bit of humor was pushing the envelope of public politeness in mid-nineteenth-century America.
