Thanks for an interesting post again Robert. I think there is an argument for communal re-composition. It's an American term coined a few years ago. I can't remember by whom. It really refers to song tunes. A good example is the 'Miller of Dee' morphing into 'The Manchester Angel' etc. I think that the term 'traditional' refers far too often to a musical medium, rather than a description of an historical background or context. However, it is a matter of convenience for the writer I suppose. There is an entire website dedicated to Music Hall and Folk, I occasionally contribute to the author. It's worth a look.
