This parody appeared in the Cleveland Leader in 1877, proving the ballad (in some form) was known in the U.S. by then:

"The newcomer in the family of Senator Christiancy, of Michigan, gets the following welcome from the Burlington [Ia.] Hawk Eye:

And if he is a good boy,
A Senator he'll be,
And follow in the footsteps
Of the elder Christiancee; [sic]
And he'll go to Washington
And pull the country through,
And he'll flirt about the Treasury
Like his daddy used to do."
