Some of the stores here in the UK have decided not to open on Boxing Day: it always used to be a trading holiday back when we were kids, but as things like Sunday shopping crept in, so out went the traditional shop-shutting days, such as Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May and August Bank holidays, etc. Here in Scotland, though, Christmas Day was declared to be a normal working day in the 17th century, and only became a public holiday in 1958. But we had two days off after Hogmanay, Jan 1st and 2nd to recover from the excesses of the Hogmanay revels. And yes, we need a new fridge-freezer and I need a new computer too, but will be waiting until the immediate post-Christmas frenzy has died down a bit!
